Generation Information System - GIS

The GIS was created to track the "attributes" of generation resources throughout the region.  The GIS separates or “unbundles” the attributes from the actual electricity generated from eligible renewable generating resources.  These attributes are then represented by electronic, serial numbered Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs.

Currently, the Connecticut DPUC requires all electric suppliers to meet Connecticut's RPS and to utilize the GIS platform to demonstrate compliance with Connecticut's RPS program.  All generating units as well as all electricity suppliers that are involved with the New England grid have electronic accounts in the GIS.
