A portion of all electricity provided in Connecticut must be produced from renewable sources of energy. This is referred to as Connecticut's Renewable Portfolio Standard or RPS.
The RPS is made up of three types of renewable resources - Class I, Class II & Class III.
Class I energy is produced from solar, wind, fuel cell, some biomass, methane gas from landfills, and more;
Class II energy is produced from trash to energy facilities, other biomass facilities and more;
Class III energy is provided from certain combined heat and power systems, energy efficiency and more.
RPS requirements were implemented in 2005 and at that time required that 4.5% of Connecticut's electricity be provided from renewable sources. The RPS percentage increases annually and will total 27% in 2020. The 2010 RPS totals 14% - 7% from Class I, 3% from Class II, and 4% from Class III sources.
Anyone that serves electric load in Connecticut must meet the annual minimum RPS percentage. This includes CL&P, UI and all electric suppliers. So, all suppliers must meet the 2011 RPS of 15%.
If a supplier claims to exceed the annual minimum the renewable percentage claimed by the supplier will be shown for that offer.
To find each supplier's fuel mix use the 'Info from CT DPUC' button to view the DPUC's Supplier Information Database.
