  • Virtual net metering allows a customer to assign the net production from their electric generator to other metered accounts that are not physically connected to that generator.

Section 121 of Public Act 11-80, An Act Concerning the Establishment of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Planning for Connecticut's Energy Future, authorized virtual net metering for Connecticut's municipal customers.  Section 121 also established the guidelines for administering virtual net metering and required the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to develop the administrative processes and program specifications to implement this policy.

DEEP established Docket No. 11-07-05, Virtual Net Metering - Program Process and Specifications, to conduct this review.  Click here to be linked to Docket No. 11-07-05.

Net metering, applies to customers who own electric generating equipment and is used to calculate the amount of electricity that is provided to the grid by these customers.  Historically, net metering has been applied to the meter or meters that are connected to the generator and that measure both the customer's consumption and output of the generator.  Learn more about net metering.
